3D - Caustic Collection by nnq2603 3D - Caustic Collection by nnq2603
I feel interesting with Vray caustic lately and try to make a nice simple collection of caustic shapes. For detect more clearly each object (all of them are build-in object in 3ds max), I've make a clay render in bottom.

Which caustic(s) do you like? IMO, I like 1,2,4,5 (order left to right, top to bottom).

Thanks 4 viewing (:

Should view in fullsize 2400x2400 to see caustic details. Available for download.

Way late, bro :D, too long time... back then there wasn't as many tutorials as now, so you could read here and there but didn't find out things you'r looking for. But I believe now (2017) you could search Vray Caustics tutorials and find out a lot of them step by step in details. I don't remember settings accurately (and the files was lost for years, even not the same computer I use that time) but I believe this one is close - www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J_e4V1zayM&feature=player_detailpage#t=308 (he uses same type of light as me, setting is very similar. Caustics setting is there, too. You can take a look and adjust it to be suitable for your goal.

try making gem stones and rendering them... its really interesting how the light passes through stuff...

True, but I think one thing current renderers don’t handle very well is simulating how the light splits up into all the colours of the spectrum. It’s hard to reproduce such dispersive media when you only have R, G and B components to work with.

yea... diamonds are the hardest, but I was semi successful at rendering them in both Mental Ray and Keyshot. (At work).

You should use some environment maps, it would make your renders much more natural and interesting :)

For this certain image, it's a bit tricky, and not physically correct solution.

I use 1 direct light (3ds max) for caustic generation and 2 Vraylight for scene lighting (warm n cold color as people usually say...).

Shadow doesn't made by the direct light (but Vray Light plane), direct light only affect caustics aspect of scene.

I mean "set high bump with MAP noise" :)

and the last question if I may... :)
Is it essential to use a modifier on the plane for example noise modifier, to achieve caustic, or just set high bump with bitmap noise in water material I' trying to create sth like that : [link]

:bulletblue: What you ask for (in the example image) is a different than my render here. Your demand is volume caustics, while my render only show regular caustic in ground plane.

:bulletblue: Only Vray 1.5 SP3 or newer (not sure) be able generate volume cautics (they've got a new VRayEnvironmentFog as a support elements). It's even tricker than what you saw here.

:bulletblue: For more details, maybe you check out a nice tutorial - www.francescolegrenzi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=188

:bulletgreen: But for your question, I think it's necessary to assign a modifier on the plane rather rely in bumpmap in material texture slot. The geometry necessary real for caustics to work correctly, as some case I test myself long time ago. If you want result with caustic then the object geometry play a important role.

Yeah, answer for your question: it was rendered in Vray with VratMtl Material and a VrayEdgeTex in Diffuse slot (one of mat slots in material properties). VrayEdgeTex set to white color. Lighting is quite simple, 2 Vray light planes with different color (You can automatically setup them with a free script called Vray Studio 0.5. Note, currently it gone to commercial v1.0.).

I'm trying to get caustic effects this good in mental ray, but I can't get them looking as sharp.

I'm inexperimental with Mental Ray. So I can't help about details, but you can try some tutorial about caustic in Mental Ray - [link] - [link] - [link]

I think light source is important to create sharp caustic effect. Try to use light (which provide parallel rays, not area light).

As I reply above from same question from another guy, I repeat the answer for you. Generally, each of them is 800x600 (except bottom one is 2400x600). It takes 1-2 minutes for each of them in 800x600 size (maybe some renders has got saved pre-calculated photon map). I don't remember what exactly but render setting is low and focus mainly to caustic effect. (Vray light - store IRR map).

Then without pre-calculated map, rendering one by one in same quality maybe take few minutes (under 8 minutes) for each one (800x600).

Of course, these scene is light and easy to process for any Pen IV CPU (higher is faster). Your laptop Pentium Celeron or pen IV 1.8, both of them be able to render these things. No doutb~ Even PenIII still able to render it.

Objects are all primitive geometry in 3ds max. Create by clicks. If you use any other 3d package I think almost basic objects is same.
